What is the Internet

How has it changed?
Over the time it has been around, we are talking since the first message was sent across the wire, the internet has undergone so many changes to
Speed
When the internet first became mainstream the standard connection was a 56k modem, this device would use the telephone line to call the internet and begin the network transmissions. As we have modernised we are seeing a vast array of newer connections including satalite uplinks and various mediums of cable, including fibre optics.
All these things have contributed to greater speed!
Availability
Capability
Now anyone can get involved with the internet to begin their empire!
No longer is the internet only for the nerds and geeks as the technology has been made simpler to use and even profitable as you will discover in these pages!
Size
Even the size of the internet has grown this is evident from the internet address scheme growing, both in terms of names, once upon of time you could only have domain names ending in .com or .co.uk etc now you can create your own suffix.
Even worse, the names computer's call themselves through IP Addresses has had to grow. Undergoing several overhauls as more and more people use this connection and communication tool!
IP Addresses!
An IP address is simply a location on the network, much like your home address, it is how the computer packets can be sent to your computer and you can send back. You can see how the internet has scaled further than it's initial creators imagined as the number of addresses has almost run out and new systems have been designed to allow the increase.
IPV4
Most people may know about IP addresses as 192.168.0.1 or something similar, these are the version 4 paradigm for IP addresses. However, they do not allow for all the internet connected devices we have today.
A technology called Network Address Translation or NAT was created to try and preserve IP addresses but we are still running out and a totally new specification has been created.
IPV6
IPV6 which is the 6th iteration of the protocol has been designed to allow for more addresses to be created. Although, not fully mainstream yet, it is coming and IP addresses will look totally different!
They will use Hexadecimal format instead of just numbers which will allow for more devices!
All Done!
Now you should have a small insight into this amazing network that surrounds us and how it is becoming a core part of our lifestyles.
It is not as big and scary as you might think with plenty of ways to participate, some ideas even included in this blog, it's not the Matrix we have been told about!
You can see already how it has grown and who knows what the future of this technology will be or what the next generation will create using this as the backbone of their creations.
